Greetings ~

I really don't remember going to the Rubber Bowl too often. I was never into sports like football so I would not have gone to any of the games. As far as rock groups, in the years that they performed at the Rubber Bowl, I was in the Army. However I remember one time that I went with my parents. I was eight years old and all I remember was that during whatever show was going on, they had a promotional spot for Ford Motor Company and they drove out a brand new 1959 Ford Skyliner onto the field. The car had the new retractable hardtop that went into the truck automatically. I remember well that when the driver flipped the switch, the top began to move and, at the halfway mark, it stuck and refused go the rest of the way and he was forced to drive it away with the hardtop stuck up in position. That was funny.

I also remember that there were adds all the time in the local newspaper about upcoming events at the Rubber Bowl. You couldn't live in Akron or the surrounding area without knowing about the Rubber Bowl. Now, like so many places, it's gone. The city couldn't bring itself to keep the upkeep on it. Too bad!

The Rubber Bowl was a great venue for entertainment during it's nearly 80-years. But now it's simply a memory thanks to Akron University. They have destroyed so many of the Akron landmarks and then built new ones. I guess that's why very few people visit this city now...nothing to do here if your not into local sports.
